The Hanks Y-DNA Project at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) was created in 2002 to identify the lines of present day Hanks, Hancks and variants and, together with genealogy research, determine how they are related to one another. Since then there have been exciting but unexpected results with the emergence of two separate groups who are unrelated in a genealogical time frame. Pedigrees submitted by participants of both these groups show them all to be patrilineal descendants of sons of William Hanks I and his wife Sarah (Woodbridge?). Note: Although it has been widely accepted, there is no source evidence documenting Sarah’s surname to be Woodbridge. Also, this may not have been Sarah’s first marriage. From the research of Nancy C. Royce: On 1 Oct 1690 William and Sarah Hanks to Alex Campbell, natural son of sd. Sarah to abide with Sarah and William and Sarah to provide him with sufficient clothing. (Please refer to Nancy’s Reports on the RESEARCH page.)
There were three known sons born after the marriage of William Hanks I and Sarah (Woodbridge? Campbell?). Y-DNA analysis indicates a possible non-paternal event occurred with the birth of Sarah’s first son after her marriage to William Hanks I. Descendants of the first born son, William Hanks II (Hanks YDNA Project Group-2) are Haplogroup R-M269. Descendants of sons Luke Hanks and John Hanks (Group-1) are Haplogroup R-M512. Descendants of Peter Hanks (Group-1) are also Hap R-M512. Research is being done to determine how Peter Hanks was related to William Hanks I.
